Basis of the edition

The present edition is based on the photographs available at the Mainzer Photoarchiv of the Hethitologie Portal Mainz, as well as the available hand-copies and relevant secondary literature up to 2019. When the original manuscripts have been collated, this is noted in the commentary.

Commentary

The composition is considered “MH?” in CHD Š 282 (quoting the spelling šar-ni-ke-er of line i 16′), but the text is certainly to be dated to the 13th cent. like most if not all other cult inventories. The fragment contains several depositions of local personnel concerning the state of shrines, cult images and offerings and the related faults (karš- “to cut off, neglect,” i 18′), and refers explicitly to compensations (šarnink- “to compensate, make restitution for, make good (claims),” i 16′; ḫapušš- “to bring after,” i 11′, 14′, 18′).

Among the attested personal names are Ali-walwalla (iv 5) and Duddu (iv 9); among the attested festivals there is the “festival of the pithos” (ḫaršiyalli-vessel, i 17′). The text mentions an object which had been given by the “father of His Majesty” (iv 6), an expression which suggests to date the tablet to the reign of Tudḫaliya IV (Cammarosano 2012: 22).

Palaeography and orthography: Late UN (based on the copy, i 5′), KI (i 16′, 21′), DI (iv 11).

iv 10: The reading Zaziša!? is based on the fact that a GN Zazita is unattested (kindly pointed out by A. Kryszeń).

iv 16: For different readings see Wilhelm 1997: 20 and Hazenbos 2003: 162.

iv 24: Interpretations as “bodyguards” (with ME as abbreviation for MEŠEDI) or “men of the hundred” (Hazenbos 2003: 163) have been proposed.
